After a journey across five continents from frozen mountains and ‘the roof of the world’ through desert, plains and jungle to tropical shores and from the largest continent to some of the smallest islands with a total of 120 passport stamps and stickers we have arrived back in the city we are pleased to call our home, London.

We expect there may be some further more anecdotal posts on the blog (also notices for example in the possible but not definite case of a photo exhibition or book in the future) if you would be interested in these please either ‘subcribe’ to the blog (and you will be alerted of new posts) or send an email to andrewscourse at hotmail dot com noting you would like to be kept informed on this. We hope you have enjoyed our intermittent blogging, and have maybe found an interesting place or two to visit for yourself in the future.

On reflection, the biggest bogeyman on the trip has been a large Chilean airline. Whilst they are comfortable in flight, their customer service and business ethics really are unbelieveable. We have never been so openly deceived, misled and incovenienced by such a large organisation. If you have to book with them then be aware there are NO rules and NO normal standard of behavior – they may cancel the flight without telling you, they may move it to a different day, they may promise you they are calling back and they never do so, they may ‘sell’ you a ticket but then quietly not process the transaction and wait for you to notice before deciding actually they need to massively increase the price, if you’re travelling in a pair they may sell a ticket to one person but then delay and stonewall to avoid selling a ticket to the other person. Don’t trust a word they say and check all information from third party sources… We half wonder if there is some kind of twisted office game where you get scores for screwing customers in different ways and the one with the most points at the end of the year gets the promotion.

Interestingly, our West Papua posts have taken a stunning 80% of all reading visits since they were posted – we never knew there was so much interest in Papua but hope some of the interest will result in tourism income for Papuan communities and projects. We’re happy to advise on Papuan travel – see below.

Finally, please also feel free to email us as above if you want suggestions on how to get to one of our featured places – it is rarely as difficult as it seems before you have taken the first step! Further to this, many of the wonderful organisations and people we have visited – for example Papua Diving (www.papua-diving.com) and Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo (www.perujungle.com) have committed their lives to protecting their unique local environments and the passage of interested tourists allows them to continue this vital work and show local communities the value of using their environment sustainably. By paying them a visit you can not only see their amazing natural environments but share in their ambition of making sure the environments are still there for future generations.

Bon voyage… and let us know your blog address!!

After leaving Chile we headed up to Peru, which has one of the best preserved Amazon regions in South America including many different habitats from flooded forest to montane cloud forest. The Amazon is always a bit of gamble from a wildlife photography perspective (unless you consider mosquitoes as a good subject – no shortage of those…). For this reason we chose to split our time between four lodges in two different regions and some quite different habitats. Firstly we visited the Tambopata-Candamo Nature Reserve in south Peru, staying at Posada Amazonas and the Tambopata Research Center, a trip kindly organised by the British Consul in Cusco who also runs Manu Expeditions (an ecotourism operator in Peru). The focus here was terra firma forest (i.e. it never floods despite the large variations in river height). We found the wildlife was quite abundant and dependable, with the 37 metre high canopy tower at Posada Amazonas excellently situated for canopy photography.

The second region was the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Community Reserve, a few hours by speedboat from Iquitos in the north of Peru, the focus here was mostly flooded forest regions. ‘Flooded forest’ may sound an unusual environment, and indeed it was a pretty unusual place – anywhere where pink dolphins swim through the tree tops and you can catch piranha on the main staircase of the lodge certainly gets our attention. We found the wildlife here to be of a different character, not so plentiful perhaps, but some really unusual stuff that you have a sporting chance of seeing. The Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo reserve is rather special in Peru as it is a reserve that is governed entirely by the local villages. People have traditionally lived in the park and continue to live and hunt in the park, but with an eye to sustainable usage – the organisation that runs the Tahuayo lodge as well as people who work there do a lot of community work financed in part by the tourists.

As regards the lottery, anyone who has tried to photograph shy wildlife in a forest full of mosquitoes and other insect delights will know that it’s not always easy – leaves and braches can hide almost anything, it’s always quite dark below the canopy, and the canopy is always backlit with sunlight. Maybe you’ll see something awesome, maybe you’ll see nothing at all (apart from a lot of mosquitoes…). To overcome these challenges we tended to get up at highly uncivilised hours of the morning to catch the wildlife activity around sunrise and on occasion dangled 100ft up in a tree from a climbing rope (climbing 37m in a scaffold tower seemed so much more pedestrian after that one…!).

With persistence (and losing a good portion of our blood to the insect wildlife!), we feel we won some pretty good prizes from the wildlife lottery and as is customary have a few below…no mosquitoes for you, dear reader, just sit back and enjoy!

These remarkable animals feature large in the folklore of the local indian communities. They are also very hard to get good pictures of here... the water is so murky that you never have any indication where they will appear next, and unlike marine dolphins they rarely breach or perform acrobatics above water. We were amazed at the frequency of sightings here though, almost every day.. and often we weren't even looking for them. If you don't mind swimming with the piranhas in your speedos (they normally only eat people in movies!) then you can even swim with them!

These amazing cats have ankle joints that allow them to almost reverse their backfeet when descending trees, so the front claws face forward while the back claws face backwards! Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo.

Tempted to buy a lottery ticket? Visit www.perujungle.com or www.manuexpeditions.com as a start, also give some thought to Peru’s premier rainforest park called Manu – we unfortunately couldn’t get there as it closes in the wet season.

After our Patagonian sausages (see previous post) we continued our general northerly direction of travel heading to the region of Chiloe island, near Puerto Montt. More than 1,000 km up the coast, but unfortunately the weather still wasn’t much better than Patagonia… still, we managed to keep one step ahead of the storms that seemed to pursue us and had some enjoyable exploration of the Fjords of central Chile. Aboard the Cahuella (run by Austral Adventures) we set out for the scenic and cultural yet seemingly rarely visited fjords and islands near Puerto Montt. We visited a few of the famous wooden churches of Chiloe (there are about 15 UNESCO listed wooden churches there) and stopped off at the rural island of Mechuque before heading into the private Pumalin Park – a large area of very scenic fjords owned by the conservation minded owner of ‘The North Face’ brand. I was vaguely amused to see that almost everyone on the boat seemed to be decked out in North Face gear to some extent…not uncommon I suspect amongst people who get there (you need a good boat and a good captain). From there we passed through the Huinay area – becoming famous for the cool water corals and other new species discovered here recently. For the marine biology minded this is an interesting area due to the phenomenon of ‘deep water emergence’ whereby deepwater organisms are encountered in very shallow water in the fjords…

Not always ideal weather, but when you can find Jurassic Park-like hot springs to warm up in then that doesn’t matter quite so much…

Let’s see whether the cold, wet and windy weather follows us to the Amazon too..! (and thanks to the receptionist who let us use her computer for blogging purposes!!)

So, the Falklands was probably a bit of a hard act to follow but with all the hype we thought Torres del Paine might be the ticket. Sadly not. After six days of satisfactory but by no means special “activity trips” in the region we can only ask “Que está comiendo todos los pasteles??” (Who is eating all the pies?). We thought we’d seen inflated prices when in French Polynesia, but those island softies could learn a thing or two from the Torres del Paine crew! Want to hire a tent for the night? That’ll be £100 please.. oh, and a sandwich lunch in a paper bag? That’ll be £12. At another hotel we passed 7 nights accomodation was on offer for $7000, and as the Chilenos use the same symbol for pesos and dollars we assumed it was just an awesome deal on flea pit accommodation, but no! It’s US dollars… and what makes it even funnier is the place has a rep for bad food!

Credit where credit is due, the scenery is nice and there is some wildlife to see (not many other places to see flamingoes, hummingbirds and local “ostriches” in between glaciers and mountains), but really? Slap us in the face again, maybe we didn’t quite wake up last time… No, it’s real alright!

As you can see below, the place is not without its charms (even when you do have weather requiring a liberal selection of bathroom vocabulary for accurate description), but it is sadly undermined by the unbridled and cynical profiteering that seems to be running rampant. (Yes, we have heard the one about how it is SO difficult to get stuff there.. it is less than five hours from Punta Arenas and about the same from Calafate, so that’s nonsense for a start). It is worth noting that the people who looked after us and guided us were professional and good company – the comments here relate to the place rather than specific people.

As a concluding thought, Torres del Paine (and the surrounds) are a pretty special area, but if you’re thinking of making the trip, think carefully what you’re going for and how much more you could get for the same price almost anywhere else in the world…

Volcanic mountains like that are not unique… (e.g. the Marquesas Islands – see previous blogposts), and an even more striking take on towers can be seen at Zhangjiajie in Hunan, China (see also previous blogs). It is clearly not a premier destination for nature photography, and as you’ll see in a following blog post, if you are looking for stunning natural scenery not strewn with large herds of flourescent backpack covers migrating majestically across the landscape from muddy campsite to muddy campsite then there are better places not so far away..!

The Falklands has extremely large breeding populations of Black-Browed Albatross. The Albatross in flight is an extremely graceful, majestic and agile bird in flight, the same cannot unfortunately be said for their landings – there I was, the intrepid wildlife photographer setting out to document the supreme skills of the Albatross in the fierce winds of the South Atlantic only to watch crash landing after crash landing with feet and albatross ass rolling around in the air with an indignant squawk… oh well, can’t have them all!

Faraway in the South Atlantic in the midst of the ‘Furious Fifties’ lie the Falkland Islands, a region whose only association in the minds of many people is the 1982 Falklands War. With reputation as a stronghold of South Atlantic wildlife, land based tourism has really taken off in the last years. With many large breeding colonies for the Black-Browed Albatross as well as being the only place outside the Antarctic to see King Penguins breeding we came down to have a look around.

We enjoyed a wonderful wildlife filled three weeks as we travelled between East Falkland, Saunders, Carcass, West Point and Sea Lion Islands (the latter made more famous after recently featuring in the flagship BBC Wildlife documentary ‘Life’). With a very relaxed and rather ‘Country England’ feel to them (tea and cakes everyday at 4pm) as well as reliable and high quality light aircraft transport between the islands they are quite accessible for independent travellers, although you would need to plan ahead at least a year as many islands only have one or two families on them and thus there may be only two or three rooms available on the whole island.

We didn’t expect so much wildlife and scenery to be so accessible within a 3 week stint, so we ended up with about 5,000 pictures as well as HD video, about 100GB to back up – Doh! With this volume we of course haven’t had time to pick through each and every picture but hope you’ll enjoy the following photo stories nonetheless!!

There is sometimes a lot of mist close to the sea surface in the Falklands so that islands appear to rise from the mist.

Some of the islands are quite mountainuous, like Steeple Jason, the world´s largest Black Browed albatross breeding colony.

While they may look small on the map, don´t be fooled - the islands are much bigger than you think! The air is so clear here you can see mountains 50 miles away as if they were only an hour or two of walking away.

The stereotype of dull islands with bad weather is not entirely true either.. some places could take a palm tree or two without looking too out of place!

While some beaches look almost tropical the full force of the Southern Ocean breaks on others.

The Republic of Guinea-Bissau is little known, even amongst the rather confused jigsaw of evocative but not deeply understood countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Most countries in this region are in the western mind reduced to somewhat one-dimensional associations. For example ask someone for the first word they think of when you say Sierra Leone, and most will say “war”. If you don’t get a blank stare in response to Guinea-Bissau then you will unfortunately most likely hear “drugs” as the association.

As the balance of growth in the global narcotics trade has shifted from the Americas to Europe the volume of drugs (especially cocaine) passing through West Africa before entering Europe has grown and continues to grow massively. In 2001 total seizures on the West African coast were less than 300kg, but by 2007 they topped 14,500 kg, the UN Office for Drugs and Crime estimates more than 50 tonnes annually is trafficked through West Africa.

Even the most naive would have to puzzle a little about how it all fits together on seeing the lavish waterfront mansions and SUVs driving around the otherwise extremely poor city of Bissau that still sports many war scars from the civil war ten years ago. The history post independence is a painful one of coups and unrest. No president of Guinea-Bissau has ever completed their term before being overthrown, deposed or assassinated. In an effort to bring attention to the problem the United Nations labelled Guinea-Bissau a ‘narco-state’ in 2007, a label that has unfortunately not helped to portray the positive sides of the country to the rest of the world.

For those willing to look beyond this unfortunate past and reputation there is much to be discovered. The chances of a Colombian drug baron seeking out tourists to make polite conversation are limited, and under the charge of a trusted operator (to be commented on further) the risk of trouble is in my view lower than an independent trip to many other more well known parts of Africa.

Lying off the coast of Guinea-Bissau is the Arquipelago dos Bijagos, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of more than 80 largely forested islands which are one of the most important wetland bird areas in Africa as well as a major turtle nesting area.
The islands are also home to the Bijogo people, a traditional rice farming people with a complex and distinctive society.

My first contact with these people was in July 2008, but only a brief encounter. I wanted to come back and if possible live in one of their villages for some time, to understand more about their lives. On this return visit I was able to live in two villages on different islands and see a little more of their culture, recorded in the photo story below. One of the fascinating things about the Bijagos is that although the islands are quite small and close together, the cultures of the different islands are sometimes quite different. There are several mutually unintelligible languages, differences in everything from clothing to house design and even historically in whether the man chose the woman in marriage or (as on the Orango group of islands) the woman chose the man.

Many of the Bijagos islands are fringed with beaches.

The wide tidal flats beyond the beaches are rich feeding grounds for Flamingoes.

Some of the Bijagos islands are uninhabited, and these especially are often major turtle nesting areas. As the sun rises it illuminates beaches covered with the meandering tracks of turtles that climbed up the beach during the night.

Looking closer at the beaches, occasionally narrow tracks lead away from the beach disappearing mysteriously into the palm jungles.

Following these paths through the bush, a sudden change occurs as palm forest and grassland regions give way to forests of old kapok trees.

Walking through the airy forest amongst these enormous trees, you are not alone. Nestled amongst these great networks of roots small houses appear. The people of these houses are the Bijogo people. Their belief is that forest spirits live in these giant kapok trees and they protect the village. Every Bijogo village on the island is quite deep in the jungle surrounded by these trees.

Both boys and girls of the Bijogo people must pass through initiation rights before adulthood. These center around the 'fanado' ritual (which is one of the most sacred ceremonies and happens only once every 7-10 years) where the young males and females are separated and taken to secret locations in the jungle where they will remain for months to learn important knowledge and skills of adulthood, including the ceremonial dances. Part of the fanado is the ornamental scarification of participants. Different villages or regions will often have different designs for these 'skin carvings'. The skin carving design of his village can be seen on this boy who is holding termite mound fragments to be used to feed chickens or for the fire.

Dance is an important part of the culture of Bijogo villages. The gentleman here is the 'dance chief' for a village on the island of Caravela. Note he has skin carvings too, but skin carvings are done at the very latest by the early teens and after some years the markings become more subtle.

House design varies between islands, on Caravela house design is traditionally square. House walls are made from dried mud with some local additives and roofed with local thatch. Traditional skirts are made from a dried grass found in the savannah like areas of the island. Interestingly, the style of the grass skirt is different on different islands.

For contrast, this is a traditional village on the island of Orangozinho, note the presence of round walled houses.

Spirits are an important and widespread part of Bijogo life. Some houses on Caravela have 'spirit branches' next to the doors of their houses. The Bijogo believe that spirits reside around forked branches like this and tie the remains of offerings and sacrifices to them. It is not uncommon to see small collections of lightly carved forked branches placed around large kapok trees.

Daily life in remote Bijogo villages is subsistence focussed. When they travel they will acquire products such as cloth in trade, however long distance voyages are rare and dangerous given local sea conditions, and in many respects they lead a self-sufficient lifestyle (most Bijogo do not own boats or fish very often, and many Bijogo cannot swim). In this picture a Bijogo woman makes a new grass skirt.

Agricultural land for the Bijogo falls into two major categories, 'lugar' (dry and sandy) and 'bulanye' (swampy and muddy) land. The sandy land is of course much harder to cultivate, however there is a local variety of peanut that, amazingly, will grow well even in what appears to be pure sand. It is harvested in November to January with small digging sticks. Work in the fields starts early before the sun rises too high and gets too hot.

Cultivation and harvesting is the work of the whole family, however young!

In sandy areas which have at least some topsoil rice planting is mixed with squash vines that produce surprisingly large and juicy fruits, as a wife of the village chief displays here.

When I felt the weight of the pounders the children use I was amazed, they must have been at least 8 kg, more than one third of the weight of some children, but they pound away for long periods seemingly without fatigue.

Like some other remote African areas, drumming is a central part of life. Bijogo villages have at least one large ceremonial drum (a 'bombolo'). Before playing this drum it must have palm rum sprayed over it as an offering to the spirits of the ancestors. By doing this, certain members of the village will be able to hear the voices of the ancestors through the drumbeat of this ceremonial drum. Here, a village elder takes mouthfuls of palm rum from a cow's horn and then loudly sprays it out over the drum (and anyone sitting too near the drum!). The concept of hearing ancestor's voices is an extension of the fact that large drums are still sometimes used to communicate between villages in remoter islands of the Bijagos.

When there was a drumbeat, movement and dance of one form or another never seemed far away for adults and children alike, many emotions seemed to be transferred from the drumbeats. (Several nights the drumming went on late into the night - not easy to sleep with, not easy at all...).

The drumbeat here came from an empty palm oil container. The women perform the 'kundere' the most famous women's dance in the Bijagos. The shorter more coloured grass skirts here are more typical in the south Bijagos.

A special dance of the men on Caravela is the 'cow dance'. Note the impressive costume has assimilated many items of an imported or modern nature such as the bells and the scarf. This inclusion of modern objects into traditional practices is one of the fascinating aspects of Bijogo culture - defunct wristwatches will appear next to traditional fetishes, plastic toy fragments next to cow hide garments. Indeed, dance itself is a living tradition here, as well as animal dances you may be lucky to witness an 'airplane dance' as people impersonate aeroplanes rather than animals - more incorporation of the modern world into their traditional practices.

The fabric tied to the hat would originally have been red, this is the colour of the spirits. This spirit (locally known as an 'iran') was at the root of a large kapok tree with a collection of animal heads strung between roots above it from sacrifice offerings. Common sacrifice offerings are chickens, sometimes fish and the occasional cow.
